Dominic Paterson PhD (University of Glasgow, Scotland): Negotiating Autonomy - directions in contemporary Scottish Art

“Summary: Over the past few years several Scottish artists have dealt with the legacies of modernism and formalism in painting, sculpture and architecture. These artists often present an ambiguous relationship to such precedents: on the one hand recovering formal approaches (including varities of abstraction), on the other, critiquing or undoing formalist claims to autonomy from a wider social sphere. This lecture will present recent work by, amongst others, Claire Barclay, Simon Starling, Lucy Skaer, Kate Davis, Mark Neville, and Neil Clements, and attempt to locate their practices in relation to ideas of post-avant-garde art making.”
